Focused on reducing carbon emissions from freight transport, SmartWay is a voluntary public-private program that benefits both the environment and program participants. Through the program, the EPA provides no-cost solutions to help freight shippers, carriers, and logistics companies track and document their fuel usage and emissions.
SmartWay participants can then use the provided tools, standards, and data to identify and employ more efficient transport modes and strategies across supply chains. By doing so, these companies can generate less pollution while reducing their costs.
Since it was founded in 2004, SmartWay has helped its partners save $196.5 million and reduced emissions by an estimated 94 million tons. With global freight activity expected to nearly double over the next two decades, SmartWay partners will play an increasingly important role in improving air quality and reducing the negative health effects of air pollution.
